The concept of green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle from sitting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction. The sustainable design of the building enhances an occupant's overall quality of life by enhancing air and water quality and decreasing noise pollution.

A green building is one which uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building. Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Homes is the first rating programmed developed in India, exclusively for the residential sector. It is based on accepted energy and environmental principles and strikes a balance between known established practices and emerging concepts. GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) is a green building design evaluation system, and LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a rating system for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.
